In early September, Harristown State High School held its first Writers’ Workshop to create a school newspaper. Nine primary schools from within the Toowoomba region sent students to participate in the event with the Year eight Academic Academy students from Harristown State High. The activity was conducted in conjunction with Literacy Week. The newspaper, to be called “The Toowoomba Times”, will be released at the beginning of October with a ceremony to celebrate the students’ achievements. Students participated in activities that focused on the different parts of a newspaper including writing articles, designing advertisements and creating features. Staff from The Chronicle kindly donated their time to assist students. The Chronicle has offered to print the paper at no charge with participating students invited to view the process to ensure that they are involved in every stage of the creation. Thank you to the many local businesses who supported the project – their assistance is greatly appreciated. |
