Year 10 English All students are expected to complete a core English program in Year 10 before choosing English (QSA) or English Communications (SAS) for Year 11. Year 10 English aims to foster an awareness of the world, examining the way the world is presented to students and exposing them to different texts and genres. When choosing an English subject in Year 11 students should consider:
§ their level of interest in the subject, § their aptitude for the subject, § their level of achievement in Year 10 and § their SET plan direction. Students who found Year 10 English challenging should choose English Communications (SAS) rather than English (QSA).
The two units studied in Year 10 are as follows:
- Term 3 Media Study – A study of how the media manipulates the way events are reported and how that impacts on the way students see their world. For assessment, students prepare a multi-media oral presentation that analyses the way a news story is covered over a period of time. They are advised to choose a major issue of interest early in the unit to help achieve this. - Term 4 Shakespeare – An introduction to the work of the best known playwright the world has ever seen. This unit offers students a chance to engage in one of Shakespeare’s best know plays - Romeo and Juliet. Students examine how the play presents issues and ideas that are still relevant in today’s world. One assessment task consists of preparing and presenting a scene from the play that has been updated to suit a modern audience, using modern language. |
