CHAPLAINCY

The History of Chaplaincy Services at Harristown

Chaplaincy has been an important part of the Harristown State High School community since 1997. The Chaplaincy Service provides a unique and valuable addition to our school support strategy and assists in fostering positive social, relational culture and a supportive, caring student environment at Harristown.

The Role of a School Chaplain

The role of a School Chaplain is designed to be complementary to other support staff working as part of a team of people caring for the welfare of students. Chaplains provide support and care to the school community through assisting at-risk students through specialised programs; supporting students, staff, parents/caregivers during critical incidents and life crises; and serving the school community in a range of ways including student groups, breakfasts, holiday activities/camps, mentoring and referral services. They are supported in this role by volunteers from local churches and the community.

The Chaplain operates from Christian principles and values, while being sensitive to other spiritual and ethical insights. The Chaplaincy service is therefore available to all students without prejudice, and with respect for each person’s right to hold their own beliefs and values.

For more information on the Chaplaincy Service and its programs, please view the Chaplaincy brochure.

Our School Chaplain

Lorinda Stiles was employed as the Chaplain at Harristown State High School in October 2006. Lorinda is well known amongst the student body and is held in high regard by both staff and students. She works four days per week and her office can be located in the Blue Gym Complex (Q43).

“As your Chaplain, my purpose is to make a difference in the school community by modelling integrity, positive life skills, and delivering a message of hope and destiny. I believe that we all have a purpose in life and we must make informed decisions and great choices that motivate us to live out our full potential and pursue our dreams. I am committed to equipping and helping you to dream big and live a life of greatness.” - Lorinda Stiles, Chaplain HSHS -

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION

All students whether they are a member of a particular nominated religious faith or not are given the opportunity to participate in non-denominational Christian religious instruction by means of an interactive seminar style presentation each school term. Parents and Guardians are advised by the Hawk Chat newsletter when religious instruction is to be conducted each term. If a student’s parent/guardian wishes to withdraw their child from the program provided, they are asked to complete RIS FORM (C1) and RIS FORM (C2).
